Above are some photos of me with my dad.
The one in the park was on what was a “good” day for him.
The other is when we left his house in Buffalo NY for what will be his last time there.
There was a difference.
The eyes give it away.
(There’s always a cognitive difference in the eyes.)
He hasn’t been able to speak for a few years.
But, oddly, music can still sometimes get some words out of him.
If I play any old songs that he used to know, he can sometimes start singing along softly. It’s very interesting how long-term memory is different from short-term memory.
And one time we went to a Sabres hockey game and he started singing along with the Canadian National anthem at the beginning, and then kept singing through the American National anthem. (they always play both in Buffalo)
Lately, if we want to hear him sing, the only thing that works is “Happy Birthday”.
It’s odd singing it for no occasion. But when Happy Birthday is the only song you know, it’s just nice to hear his voice again.
Currently we’re trying to find a memory care home for him.
Which is proving more difficult than one would think it would be.
There just isn’t any space available.
Shocking, given the massive wave of baby boomers like my dad who are now at the age of needing assisted living. But there doesn’t seem to have been enough forward planning, and now there is a massive gap that can’t fill the demand.
Which, while it is a challenge for us and many others right now, it’s also an opportunity for you.
How?
Because you can start an Assisted Living Facility and massively boost-up the rent you get from even a fairly normal sized house.
The type of normal house you find literally EVERYWHERE.
