Why real estate investors are like jazz musicians

Let me tell you a story.

I was scuba diving in Cartagena, Colombia.

One of the guys on the dive boat was a Frenchman.

He now lives in America and makes a living as a jazz musician. (He said there wasn’t much opportunity for that in France, so he came to the good ol’ USA where we actually appreciate jazz.)

We discussed music and jazz between his endless cigarettes (you can take the Frenchman out of France, but not…)

And he said something about jazz that I thought applies to real estate investors and entrepreneurs as well.

He said, “Jazz is a framework, not an exact path.”

Just like I teach flipping houses.

I teach in frameworks so you can freestyle within the framework, not be stuck to a rigid inflexible script (life just don’t follow a script…)

Classical music relies on exact paths and solid structures, but in jazz you only have a general idea where you’re going, but the exact path is unknown. It’s up to you to figure out how to get there and make it beautiful in the process.

Yup, just like in the real estate investing business.

You know the outcome is supposed to be a profitable deal, but the exact path each and every deal takes will be different.

There are a lot of different moving parts.

And a lot of obstacles that try to block you along the way.

So you have to stay fluid and be adept at going with the flow.

That’s how you make profitable deals.

And that’s how you make great jazz.
