What’s better: Treat the cause or mask the symptom?

This is an interesting discussion I had with Doug Ottersberg.

The question is:
Do You Live Your Life At Cause – or Effect?

DOUG OTTERSBERG:

Have you ever walked into a dark room, flipped the light switch, and nothing happened?

Did you get mad at the electricity?

Probably not.

You’d more than likely look for the cause. You’d check the bulb by replacing it, and if that didn’t work, you might check that it was plugged in if it’s that kind of lamp, or go to the circuit breaker, and so on until you figured out the cause of the lamp not turning on.

Once you “fix” the cause, the result (effect) you want, the light to turn on, will take care of itself.

It’s been said that throughout their life, most people are wired to do one of two things:
#1 – move away from pain
#2 – move towards pleasure.

Away from painful or negative results like a bad relationship or a low paying unsatisfying job, and towards a better relationship, more money, more health, more fun, etc.

Most folks are quick to claim credit for their success, and yet when their results are negative, they tend to attribute the result to their external environment, someone or something else is at fault for their failure: “Oh so and so did this to me, or” it’s the economy, the government, my childhood, etc”.

In fact, the simple fact is this:
All results are based on your internal environment.

Whatever your experience (good or bad) is regarding the results you’re getting in your life right now is a direct result of an action you took based upon a decision you made using your mind.

While that’s true, isn’t it interesting that most people not only don’t understand that principle, they also have no clue how their mind works.

Though it’s likely you don’t really know or understand exactly what electricity is, that doesn’t prevent you from using it, does it?

And though you may not understand exactly how your mind works, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t learn to harness and use it intelligently, does it?

Do you treat the cause or mask the symptom?

Today there are more prescriptions written for depression and anxiety than ever before. At best, the expensive medication only covers up the symptom; it does nothing to address the actual cause of the problem.

On top of that, many people experience undesirable side effects that further complicate their life and make things worse! Truly, wouldn’t it be way more effective to just deal with the cause and skip the rest?

How many areas of your life can you think of where you might be covering up or masking the result instead of dealing with the root cause and taking care of it in a much more effective way?

Remember, all the results you’re experiencing now are occurring because of actions you took based upon a decision you made in your mind.

Doesn’t it make sense to do whatever it takes to learn to use your mind like you would any other tool?

If you are eager to experience less of the things you don’t want and more of the things you do, if you NEED to take back control of your life, increase your wealth, health and happiness, then don’t you owe it to yourself to start at the beginning, and consciously start directing the cause of your entire experience instead of leaving it to chance?

Although I’d really like to, I’m certainly not going to tell you that you need to learn more about your mind and how to use it effectively; because that is something you need to decide for yourself.

The choice my friend, is always yours.
