The Pay Raise I Never Got

Let me tell you a story.

Back in the olden days of the late 1990’s, I had a full-time job.

I considered myself underpaid for all I did
(probably most people think the same of their own situation).

I was in a mid-level position.

The “Director of Operations”.

Every time I had to hire someone, we’d pay them more than I was being paid.

This always bothered me.

And while every time it was time for a raise I did actually get one, but it still kept me behind the new people who worked for me.

The pay raise was always just minimal.

I used to joke that I’d be better off quitting and coming back, or just going somewhere else, as the new blood got what they were worth and what the market was paying, while us “old-timers” just got a small increase.

Heck, I was only aiming for $20K more per year.

But I never got it.

My boss refused.

I was mad about this at the time.

Insulted.

De-motivated.

And feeling hopeless.

But looking back, I’m HAPPY about it now.

Had he given me that extra $20 grand I may not have jumped ship.

I would have been stuck — and stuck with just that measly $20K.

Rather than being able to make that $20K over and over again as frequently as I can having my own real estate investing business.

And I wouldn’t have had anywhere near the free time or lifestyle that I have now and have massively enjoyed for more than 20 years now.

And it was the lifestyle that I really wanted.

So I actually owe my old boss a BIG thank you.

I was mad at the time.

But he actually did me a favor.

A really BIG favor.

And now I’m eternally grateful.
