Let me tell you a story.
I was sitting in a job interview more than 20 years ago, before I got into real estate.
The guy interviewing me basically made fun of all my experience.
Like it wasn’t good enough.
More accurately, I was more experienced and had had more excitement than he had been at the age I was then. (and probably more than even the age he was then.)
So he basically took a dump all over me.
* Told me my experience was over-inflated.
* Not really that valuable.
* That I didn’t really have any skills that were super valuable.
* All us kids thought we were just so great while we weren’t really.
* And I had nothing that every other person applying for the job didn’t have too.
All of which admittedly stuck in my mind when I finally decided to make the move to be on my own.
Because why put up with people who didn’t really get was possible?
Especially if what they were really doing was hiding behind a thin veneer of “security” of a regular old 9 to 5 job.
You tend to become that which you are around.
I wanted different.
But that type of personality wouldn’t even understand me.
They cling to a false sense of “security” — I cling to freedom and the thrill of being on my own.
For all the hoops they wanted me to jump through, I might as well have spent my time and energy jumping through the hoops needed to start my own entrepreneurial business.
But I didn’t right away, because the old mentality had a stranglehold on me.
A hold that didn’t break for another couple years, when once again enough was finally enough.
Then my only regret was that I hadn’t done it sooner.
In my view being dependent only on myself is the only way to have true security.
What I’ve seen through the years now does nothing but confirm that view.
