Let me tell you a story…
I was looking at the map and trying to adjust our driving route for a change in plans.
Now I needed to go southbound.
But the roads I wanted to take out of South Dakota were all labeled as Indian Reservations. And all the signs around kept saying that all tribal lands were closed to all visitors due to the virus.
I asked a park ranger at one of our stops if he knew of any issues getting across the reservation.
“All depends on who’s working at the checkpoint,” he said dryly.
If they didn’t let me through, it’d add a few hours to the drive. Not the end of the world, but not my first choice either.
I figured it was worth a try.
If I was wrong, I’d have lost about 90-minutes having to backtrack. But if I was right, I’d save massive amounts of time.
So we proceeded.
The checkpoint was a guy next to his car.
As I approached, he stepped into the road and signaled me to stop.
“Where you goin’?” he asked.
“Nebraska” was my simple reply.
“You been sick?”
“Nope.”
“Okay, I’ll let you through. But don’t stop until you’re out the other side of our lands.”
I thanked him and drove forward.
Turned out to be rather uneventful. And I was very happy to have the super-shortcut. As an added bonus, the road wasn’t paved, so it had that delightful feeling of driving off-road, kicking up loose gravel and avoiding random mudholes.
Fun!
And it got be thinking about my real estate investing business.
(doesn’t everything…)
Most of the time you want to take the most direct path to success.
But sometimes you get sent the long way around.
The thing is, you don’t know until you try.
And if you never try…
Then obviously you’ll never know.
So…
The lesson is you simply have to try.
Otherwise you don’t know what the true answer would be.
If it doesn’t work, then you go back to the drawing board, make adjustments, and then TRY again.
I’ve gone through this same cycle hundreds of times in my nearly 20 years of real estate investing.
You’ll have to go through it too.
So get cracking.
Now, I’m not saying it’ll have the same results for you. It probably won’t.
But this is what I’ve done, it’s been working well, and I think it can work well for you too.
How do you find out?
Try.
